Portrait Of A Court Gentleman With An Elaborate Ruff – Circa 1600-1615

A very fine portrait of a court gentleman, oil on canvas, painted around the turn of the 17th century, circa 1600-1615.

The young man is portrayed bust-length against a dark background, wearing a sumptuous black costume enriched with gilt ornaments and broad sections of red fabric richly woven or embroidered with gold.

The spectacular large lace ruff, painted with remarkable precision and delicacy, is one of the most striking features of the portrait. The exceptional attention given to the lace, embroidery, ornaments and different textures of the costume reveals an artist fully accustomed to aristocratic and court portraiture.

The costume reflects the strong influence of Spanish fashion, which was widely adopted by the major European courts at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century. The composition and quality of execution suggest several possible artistic origins — Italian, Spanish or Franco-Flemish — although no precise attribution can currently be established.

The sitter remains unidentified, but the exceptional richness of his costume and the formal character of the portrait clearly indicate a figure belonging to the highest aristocratic or court circles.

The canvas underwent an early relining, probably during the 18th century, and was mounted on a substantial old chestnut stretcher.

The painting is presented in an old carved and gilded wooden frame, probably 18th century, most likely dating from the same period as this early restoration.
