Lacquered Wooden Planter With Chinese-style Decoration – Napoleon III Period
An elegant rectangular planter made of black-lacquered wood, resting on four small ball-shaped feet, adorned on all four sides with a rich polychrome and gilded chinoiserie design. The scenes depict figures moving through an oriental landscape animated by pavilions, bridges, lanterns, and stylized vegetation, in the style of Far Eastern lacquerware that was highly prized in the 19th century.
The interior retains its original zinc liner, designed to protect the wood from moisture. The piece as a whole features a beautiful patina with some signs of wear that contribute to its authenticity.
