18th-century Portrait, 18th Century, Noble, Nobility, Count Of Provence, Louis XV, Bourbon, Drouais, Painting, Louis XVI

Artist: Hubert Drouais Atelier
An 18th-century oil-on-canvas painting from the reign of Louis XV depicting a prince of the Bourbon family who, according to the family tradition of the former owners, is believed to be the Count of Provence: Louis Stanislas Xavier of France, brother of Louis XVI and the future Louis XVIII.
The richness of his attire attests to his rank.
He is dressed in a blue velvet court coat, wearing the blue sash of the Order of the Holy Spirit, complemented by a waistcoat embroidered with gold thread depicting floral motifs and a jabot of guipure lace.
He wears a large powdered wig with curls, in the style popular during the reign of Louis XV.
This painting is comparable to those by Hubert DROUAIS (1727–1775) and his studio.
It can be dated to the years 1773–1775. This attribution is plausible when comparing this portrait to several workshop versions now held in public collections.
DROUAIS had become the portrait painter for the Count and Countess of Provence beginning in 1771.
This painting is set in a beautiful Louis XV-style frame made of wood carved with seashell motifs and gilded.
A cartouche on the frame reads: 18th-century French school.
The painting was previously re-stretched and shows some old touch-ups.
The varnish is somewhat thick and has yellowed; thinning is possible but not essential, as the painting can be hung as is.
Dimensions with frame: 54.50 cm x 46 cm.
Dimensions of the painting itself: 38.50 cm x 30.50 cm.
