16th-century German Half-hand Sword

16th-Century German One-and-a-Half-Hand Sword.

This highly distinctive and finely crafted German sword, dating from around 1560, is undoubtedly one of the most interesting pieces we have ever had in our collection.

Featuring a remarkable guard, this sword is an early example of German swordsmithing and is in excellent condition.

The hilt consists of two large side rings serving as finger guards and curved quillons; all the ends feature a spiral pattern.

The pommel repeats this same spiral pattern, while the grip is wrapped in leather.

The double-edged blade features an interesting engraving at the ricasso as well as two marks shaped like hearts or pikes. It is in excellent condition and shows no play; it appears to have been blunted over time.

The sword itself is very sturdy and offers excellent handling.

This type of sword is rarely found in such condition; it is one of the most sought-after German models.

Superb overall condition for a museum-quality piece that is perfectly balanced.
