A Look at the Work ®

A work remains defined by the primacy of the gesture and the momentum of the line. 

This 1968 gouache marks a shift toward greater graphic force, moving away from elaborate backgrounds to focus on a powerful verticality. Forms rise up in the center of the sheet like calligraphic signs.

The work is structured around a central axis, a veritable backbone from which blue and red curves spring forth. Here we find the idea of a sudden surge: each stroke seems to be a clear decision, a definitive impulse that gives the painting the appearance of a burst of energy.
The color palette has become more radical, featuring purer colors and a black that gains in authority, structuring the whole with greater rigor than in 1961.

Pichette’s technique remains dynamic, playing on bold layers where one can clearly discern the order in which the brushstrokes were applied. By simplifying his approach, the artist gains in intensity: the empty space on the paper becomes an essential breath of fresh air that underscores the vigor of each movement.
