A Closer Look at the Work ®

This dark-patinated bronze is striking for its dramatic intensity and vigorous modeling. The handling of the material is distinguished by agitated, rugged surfaces that catch the light sharply, heightening the scene's tension.

At the summit, a bacchante rises in a daring twist, her head thrown back toward the sky in a surge of Dionysian ecstasy. With her left hand, she presses a bunch of grapes against her shoulder, while her right hand firmly grips the hair of the faun beneath her. This vigorous pull forces the hybrid creature’s head—recognizable by its pointed ears—backward, merging his face with the raw, rocky mass of the base.

The work radiates remarkable athletic power and raw strength; the play of bulging muscles and the interlocking bodies convey a mythological embrace that is at once wild, domineering, and passionate.

The Émile Godard Art Foundry :

This art foundry holds a major place in French bronze sculpture, thanks to the excellence of its sand and lost-wax casting techniques.

Taken over by Dina Vierny in 1976 to ensure its survival, the foundry was entrusted with producing the works of Aristide Maillol, thereby preserving its precious artisanal expertise. Committed to the authenticity of traditional methods, this elite workshop has cemented its prestige among major institutions such as the Musée Rodin.

Today, the Godard Foundry remains one of the most emblematic symbols of French heritage and excellence in the art of bronze.
