The Farewell Kiss - A Rare 18th-century Carved Wooden High-relief

A rare decorative piece, likely from an altarpiece or a sculpted ensemble, made of softwood in the 18th century.

Depicted in high relief, the composition shows two figures exchanging a kiss in a pose marked by emotion and restraint.

The male figure, wearing an imposing plumed helmet and dressed in ancient style, appears to be bidding farewell to his companion before leaving for battle. This unusual iconography could thus evoke the farewell of a warrior or a hero from antiquity.

The precise identification of the scene, however, remains a mystery. It could be an episode drawn from ancient history, mythology, or an allegory of separation.

The hypothesis of “Judas’s Kiss” can also be considered, although the helmet and costume of the figure on the left suggest more of a heroic or military scene.

The sculptor paid particular attention to the faces, hair, and clothing. The deeply carved drapery, the varying planes of relief, and the expressive proximity of the two figures lend the work a beautiful sense of depth.

The sculpture retains a warm, antique patina in deep walnut tones, perfectly highlighting the volumes and details of the work.
