Evangelist, Wooden Sculpture From The Early 1600s, Life-size
This important wooden sculpture depicts an Evangelist (St. Luke or St. Mark), although the absence of iconographic attributes makes it difficult to identify.
The work is carved wood, characterized by a strong expressive and dynamic quality. The face is the emotional focal point of the statue. It features marked and decisive features: the beard and hair, sculpted with voluminous, wavy locks, convey an air of wisdom and maturity.
The gaze: the eyes are deep, turned slightly downward and to the side, suggesting a moment of deep reflection or divine inspiration.
The drapery: the rendering of the garments is masterful and constitutes the most dynamic element of the sculpture. The folds are deep and heavy, creating a strong contrast of chiaroscuro (light and shadow) that lends volume and plasticity to the figure.
The cloak crosses the body diagonally, a classic device to break the static composition and guide the viewer’s eye along the entire height of the figure.
A high-quality sculptural piece from Central Italy, carved from a single block of wood into a solemn and authoritative figure.
