Artist: Jan Borremans
Sculpture attributed to Jan Borreman (Borremans dynasty), Brussels, circa 1480. The sculpture depicts one of the twin brothers, Cosmas or Damian (Syria, second half of the 3rd century); these brothers (physicians) provided free medical care, which led many people to convert to Christianity. They were considered the “saints without money.” The brothers were arrested during the persecution of Christians, and after professing their Christian faith, they were beheaded in the year 303 A.D. As for the sculpture, it is of such high quality that even though the two arms that held the jar of ointment are missing, the power and craftsmanship of the work still inspire admiration some 550 years later.
