This piece is unsigned but is attributed to G. Dupré, based on a copy held in the collections of the Musée d’Orsay.
Georges Dupré (1869–1909): French sculptor, engraver, and medalist. He trained notably under Gabriel-Jules Thomas and Oscar Roty, two major figures in French sculpture and medal art.
In 1896, he won the First Grand Prix de Rome for engraving on medals and semi-precious stones, and went on to receive numerous awards at the Salons.
His work consists primarily of medals and bronze plaques, with a preference for allegorical, symbolic, and religious themes, as well as scenes from contemporary life: his highly detailed compositions, strongly modeled figures, and effects of depth sometimes give his reliefs a truly sculptural quality.
The example in the Musée d’Orsay is a smaller version (24 x 19 cm) dated around 1899.
