"Large Trumeau Mirror H215cm, With Wallpaper, Italy, 18th Century"
An elegant giltwood trumeau mirror, its originality and rarity lie in its upper section, made of wallpaper: the scene, framed by painted flowers, depicts the god Apollo seated at the foot of a tree, playing the lyre to entertain a group of spectators. In the background, Mercury with his caduceus also appears to be listening to the sweet music.
The mirror in the lower section is made of mercury; the background is parquet.
This Louis XVI period trumeau shows signs of wear: holes, tears, and peeling of the wallpaper, as well as wear consistent with age and use on the frame and mirror.
