G. Dupré, *alma Parens*, Large Bronze Allegorical Relief, Early 20th Century

Artist: Georges Dupré 1869-1909
Large bronze plaque in high relief depicting a woman breastfeeding and surrounded by children, with a warrior and a peasant on either side

Titled "Alma Parens" and bearing the inscriptions "aratro" and "Ense," the title refers to a symbolic Latin motto, which can be literally translated as “The Nurturing Mother, by the Sword and by the Plow.”

Military defense and farming are the two forces that contribute to a country’s prosperity.

Piece signed by G. Dupré (1869–1909): French sculptor, engraver, and medalist. He trained notably under Gabriel-Jules Thomas and Oscar Roty, two leading figures in French sculpture and medal art.
In 1896, he won the First Grand Prix de Rome for engraving on medals and semi-precious stones, and went on to receive numerous awards at the Salons.

His work consists primarily of medals and bronze plaques, with a preference for allegorical, symbolic, and religious themes, as well as scenes from contemporary life: his highly detailed compositions, strongly modeled figures, and effects of depth sometimes give his reliefs a truly sculptural quality.

The Musée d’Orsay owns a smaller version (9 x 13 cm) of *Alma Parens* dated 1899.
