Hand-modeled Terracotta Lioness By Charles Gréber – Circa 1900

A remarkable sculpture depicting a seated lioness, hand-modeled in terracotta and finished in a warm brown glaze.

The lioness is depicted with power and realism, with particular attention paid to her musculature, head, and legs. The traces of the hand-modeling are clearly visible in the fur and on the base, giving the piece a lively and unique character.

The sculpture is clearly signed “Ch. Gréber” on the side of the rectangular base. This signature corresponds to Charles Gréber (1853–1935), a famous French ceramicist based in Beauvais.

Charles Gréber is best known for his Art Nouveau ceramics, his flamed stoneware, and his architectural decorations. His animal sculptures in the round are much less common.
