Pair of Large Wrought-Iron Fireplace Grates – High Period – Late 16th / Early 17th Century

A beautiful and imposing pair of solid wrought-iron fireplace mantel brackets, dating from the Haute Époque, late 16th or early 17th century.

These fire grates feature a particularly sturdy construction, characteristic of accessories for large antique fireplaces. Each piece consists of a thick, vertical upright, topped by a large, rounded finial, and resting on a widely open arched base.

Long, sturdy hearth bars extend toward the back and were designed to hold large logs at a distance from the back of the fireplace to ensure proper air circulation.

The entire piece is crafted from thick, particularly heavy wrought iron, reflecting traditional blacksmithing techniques and a design built to last. The iron now features a beautiful brown, oxidized patina, with the irregularities and signs of wear characteristic of objects that have actually been used in a fireplace.

A pair of fire grates with beautiful proportions and a commanding presence, particularly decorative in a large antique fireplace, a home of character, a castle, or a country house.

Period: High Renaissance – late 16th / early 17th century

Distinguishing feature: particularly heavy pieces
