Italian Ceremonial Shield With Relief Decorations, 17th–18th Century

Italian ceremonial shield with relief decoration, 17th–18th century

This magnificent example of high-quality Italian armor belonged to a nobleman or high-ranking officer and was used during processions or parades.

A rare find, this beautiful specimen is in excellent condition for its age and retains some remnants of its original lining.

The shield is richly decorated with numerous varied motifs and images depicting creatures and demons, all harmonizing with the central relief image of Hercules slaying his son, standing above the Nemean lion. These motifs appear to have been gilded, as evidenced by traces of gilding. The rim is finely crafted with various depictions of weapons and armor.

There are also a few small pinholes in the steel, caused by age and wear.

The handle is a later addition.

A truly exceptional piece.
