Small Mahogany And Leather Box From Cuba — Louis-philippe Period, Mid-19th Century
France, circa 1840–1850
Cuban mahogany, leather, and bronze fittings
Seven leather-covered compartments
A very elegant Louis-Philippe-era desk cabinet, crafted in the mid-19th century from Cuban mahogany, remarkable for the quality of its veneer, the richness of its grain, and the warm tone of its wood.
Intentionally compact in size, this piece features a particularly refined design: a front punctuated by seven leather-covered compartments, each fitted with its own bronze pull knob, framed by wide mahogany stiles and topped by an elegant molded cornice.
The contrast between the precious mahogany wood and the fawn-colored leather of the fronts is particularly appealing. This combination, characteristic of 19th-century office furniture, gives the piece an appearance that is at once understated, warm, and extremely distinguished.
The filing cabinet was designed to hold files, correspondence, papers, and documents. This type of furniture, particularly popular in notaries’ offices, law firms, and lawyers’ offices, allowed documents to be stored and organized while keeping them secure behind its locking mechanisms. The filing cabinet became particularly widespread in professional settings during the reign of Louis-Philippe.
Our example stands out for its excellent condition and has been fully restored in our workshops, with care taken to preserve its patina, materials, and original character.
The mahogany now displays a magnificent depth of color and beautiful grain, while the leather fronts have retained their decorative appeal.
The key, which has been replaced, is not original—the only detail worth noting on this elegant piece.
With its dimensions and slender silhouette, this small filing cabinet will naturally fit into an office, library, entryway, or study, but can also be repurposed as a small storage piece in a contemporary interior.
A particularly charming piece of artisanal furniture, where the nobility of Cuban mahogany harmonizes with the warmth of the leather, and which stands as a beautiful testament to French office furniture from the July Monarchy.
