Second Empire Gilt And Patinated Bronze Desk Inkwell
Beautiful Second Empire-period patinated and gilded bronze desk inkwell, in the taste of the refined productions of the Alphonse Giroux house, famous for its luxury and curiosity objects under Napoleon III.
This elegant piece features a neoclassical design inspired by Antiquity, with its cassole shape resting on a finely crafted pedestal. The ensemble is embellished with two side sockets evoking antique bells or suspension arms, bringing great character and originality to the composition.
The lid is surmounted by an elegant turned fretel, while the body features rich ornamental decoration centered on a fantastically-headed mascaron.
The particularly decorative circular saucer features a frieze in relief depicting a Greek battle or heroic ancient scene, treated in an archaeological spirit much appreciated under the Second Empire. This animated decoration of moving figures recalls the XIXᵉ century taste for classical antiquity and archaeological discoveries.
Very fine quality of casting and chasing for this decorative yet functional desk object, typical of the elegant creations of the Napoleon III period.
