The lid is surmounted by an elegant turned fretel, while the body features rich ornamental decoration centered on a fantastically-headed mascaron.

The particularly decorative circular saucer features a frieze in relief depicting a Greek battle or heroic ancient scene, treated in an archaeological spirit much appreciated under the Second Empire.
