Pair Of School Benches Made Of Tubular Steel And Solid Oak — France, 1950s
A very beautiful pair of French school desks from the 1950s, featuring a simple, functional, and decidedly industrial design, particularly representative of public furniture from the Reconstruction period.
The frame is made of welded tubular steel, with slightly curved legs connected by long crossbars and struts that give the entire structure remarkable sturdiness. The original dark green paint, preserved on the frame, adds a beautiful patina and highlights the authentic character of these pieces.
The seats, made of beautiful solid oak slats, have been completely replaced with new ones in our workshops. The wood was chosen for its grain and quality, lending remarkable warmth to the austere metal structure.
Both benches were restored in our workshops, while preserving their original proportions, construction, and spirit.
With their simple construction and functional aesthetics, they are fully in line with the trend of French industrial furniture from the 1950s, a period that saw the development of sturdy, rational, and unadorned furniture, intended primarily for schools and public institutions.
In the absence of any markings or provenance that would allow for a definitive attribution, we are deliberately presenting them as a French production from the 1950s, without attributing them to a specific designer. Their design, however, evokes the experiments conducted during that era with metal furniture by the leading figures in French design.
When paired together, these benches take on a truly decorative quality. They would be perfect around a large farmhouse table or an industrial-style table, but could also find their place in an entryway, a kitchen, a library, or a contemporary interior.
A rare pair full of character, where the precision of the patinated metal interacts with the warmth of solid oak, offering furniture that is as decorative as it is functional.
