Louis XVI-style Fir Wood Secretary Desk – 18th Century

We are pleased to present this very elegant period Louis XVI secretary desk, crafted entirely of fir and retaining numerous original features that attest to its authenticity and character.

Understated and refined, it stands out for its original bronze fittings, particularly its remarkable lock plates adorned with small stars—a decorative detail especially characteristic of the Louis XVI style. The cabinet opens in the center via two doors, revealing an interior fitted with shelves and storage compartments, while the lower section consists of three large drawers.

The piece rests on its original legs and also retains its original trim and back panel—all elements that contribute to its historical significance and excellent condition. The lock and key, however, have been replaced.

This secretary desk was completely restored in our workshop. It was carefully stripped to the bare wood to reveal the natural, warm beauty of the fir, then treated as a preventative measure against wood-boring insects. We chose to preserve its authentic appearance, its irregularities, and the wood’s beautiful natural patina, rather than giving it an overly polished finish.

Its current aesthetic—which is at once authentic, luminous, and timeless—fits perfectly with the shabby chic style and with contemporary interiors that love to combine antique furniture, natural materials, and elegant simplicity.

A very lovely 18th-century piece, full of charm and character, that will fit just as well in a historic home as in a more contemporary setting seeking a genuine piece of French furniture.
