Antique French Portrait Miniature On Ivory, Edmond D’ainval Aged Ten, Dated 1815
A charming antique French portrait miniature painted on ivory, depicting Edmond Millon d’Ainval (1805–1874) at approximately ten years of age.
The young sitter is portrayed wearing a dark blue coat, high white collar and black cravat, against a subtly shaded grey background.
An old handwritten label on the reverse identifies the sitter as “Mon père Edmond d’Ainval” and bears the date 1815. A separate, more faintly written inscription appears to read “à Lucile”, probably recording a later family dedication or ownership.
Edmond Millon d’Ainval subsequently became a French army officer and chef de bataillon.
The miniature is preserved behind glass within a finely chased gilt-brass slip and its square wooden frame.
Miniature: 4.6 cm diameter.
Frame: 10 × 10 cm.
