Object description :

"5 Kozuka Japanese Fruit Knives, Meiji Period, Mixed Metal Inlays"

A fine set of five Japanese fruit knives, dating from the Meiji period (1868–1912). Each knife measures 20.8 cm in length and features a steel blade with engraved Japanese characters. The handles are decorated in the style of kozuka (small sword knife handles), executed in shakudō and copper alloys with delicate mixed-metal inlays (iroe zōgan) of gold and silver.

The motifs include landscapes, floral scrolls, animals, and figures in relief, demonstrating the refined artistry of Japanese metalworkers. After the prohibition of wearing swords in 1876, many artisans who had specialized in sword fittings (kozuka, tsuba, menuki) redirected their skills toward luxury objects and export wares. This set of knives reflects that transition, blending traditional samurai-era craftsmanship with Western dining culture.

Condition: Good antique condition with wear consistent with age and use. Some surface marks and oxidation to the blades. Handles retain fine detail and original patina.

A rare and decorative set, reflecting both Japan’s artistic heritage and the adaptation of sword-making skills to new purposes during the Meiji era.
