Antique Thai Bronze Buddha Head Fragment, Ayutthaya Period, 15th–16th Century

A small antique bronze head of the Buddha, originally part of a complete statue, dating to the Ayutthaya period of Thailand, circa 15th–16th century.

The head displays the characteristic stylistic features associated with Thai Buddhist sculpture of this period, including the tall flame-shaped finial rising from the ushnisha, symbolising the spiritual radiance of the Buddha. The hair is rendered in dense rows of small raised curls, while the face shows gently arched brows, elongated eyes, a serene expression and long earlobes.

Fragments of small devotional bronzes such as this were originally part of seated or standing Buddha figures used in temple or domestic shrines.

The bronze has developed a fine aged surface with areas of dark brown patination and traces of green oxidation consistent with considerable age.

The head is now mounted on a discreet wooden stand for display.
