In "the Handing Over Of The Keys To Saint Peter." A Study Of Saint Paul After Ingres.
Artist: à Identifier
A very beautiful oil study on canvas depicting Saint Paul in Ingres’s painting
, “Jesus Handing the Keys to Paradise to Saint Peter,” from the Ingres Museum
in Montauban. This study, created somewhat later than the painting, was most likely
executed by a student of the master who has yet to be identified.
In Ingres’s painting, we see a man standing back in the shadows, holding out an open hand
, as if in a symbolic gesture of acclamation or adoration. This is believed to be Paul, who
is not actually mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew, since the text of the Acts of the Apostles
relates that Paul was converted after having a vision of the risen Jesus.
See attached photos.
It is an oil on canvas, with a gold background applied around the portrait.
The thin canvas is mounted on thick cardboard.
Presented in its original key-frame, never removed from its wooden and gilded stucco frame.
Dimensions of the painting without the frame: 31.5 cm x 20.5 cm.
Total dimensions with the frame: 44 cm x 33 cm
