Traditional Ceremonial Torque, China, 19th Century

Traditional ceremonial torque (rigid breastplate necklace) of the Miao (or Hmong) culture, a cultural group living primarily in the mountainous regions of southern China, such as Guizhou.
Recognizable by its stylized crescent moon shape, typical of this culture.The central structure is adorned with hand-engraved and hand-embossed scrollwork.It is finished with delicate spiral details and a simple hook clasp.

Traditionally referred to as “Miao” silver, this is low-purity silver.
This piece displays a beautiful patina and natural oxidation, attesting to its age.
A fragment of an ancient red wax seal remains on the back.
