This 17th-century Flemish still life, set against a dark background, was painted by a mysterious, unidentified Antwerp artist during the third quarter of the 17th century. More than a hundred paintings by this master are known, but none are signed. Art historians have nicknamed him “Pseudo-Simons,” although it would have been more accurate to call him “Pseudo-Gillemans.” Our still life was previously attributed to Jan Davidsz. de Heem, who, in turn, strongly influenced the Gillemans father and son.
Pseudo-Simons’ compositions can sometimes be excessive, with an overly exuberant Baroque style and a profusion of elements that he sought to cram into a single space. That is not the case here: this harmonious composition is light and balanced.
