Jacob Toorenvliet was a Dutch painter from Leiden. He spent several years in Rome, Venice and Vienna. At the age of forty, he returned to Leiden.
The parable of the Rich Man and Poor Lazarus teaches us that a life of luxury can lead to spiritual blindness and that our earthly sins, in this case indifference, will be eternally punished.
