This beautiful and highly original portrait of a man bears a signature and a date that appear authentic but are in fact forgeries. They must have been added in the 19th century. When I acquired it, the canvas was covered with a thick layer of old varnish. Stylistically, it was not immediately clear that it could be attributed to van den Eeckhout, but the signature “seemed” to be his.
But alas, no: it is a 17th-century portrait of a handsome man, unfortunately unattributed. It could be Dutch, perhaps French, or even English. A mystery and a source of frustration for me. Nevertheless, it remains an authentic portrait by an innovative painter.
