Hubert Hansen: Louis XV-era Chest Of Drawers With Satinwood Veneer—stamped

Beautiful chest of drawers with a stepped top, featuring satinwood marquetry veneered with butterfly wings and horizontal bands. It opens with 2 drawers. Beautifully finished with finely chiseled bronze hardware gilded with fine gold. Light-colored Languedoc Red marble with a “bec de corbin” pattern. Made in Paris, entirely of oak. Early Louis XV period, circa 1750: the design still bears traces of the Regency style.
Our chest of drawers is a beautifully crafted piece. Unsurprisingly, it bears the mark of a great master: Hubert Hansen.
After obtaining his master’s certificate in 1747, Hubert Hansen set up his workshop on Rue de Charenton and died a few years later, in 1756. The numerous pieces he left behind are in the Louis XV style,classically shaped, crafted with great taste and elegance,generally made of rosewood and violetwood veneerand richly decorated with flowers, foliage, and rocaille-style bronze fittings.
Red marble from Languedoc had been highly sought after since the 17th century, to the point that it became a royal quarry in 1692 and came under the direct supervision of the Bâtiments du Roi. Known as the “Carrière du Roy” during the reign of Louis XIV, the king made extensive use of it, notably for the Palace of Versailles, the Palace of Saint-Cloud, and many other royal buildings.
The chest of drawers is in excellent condition; the buff-polished finish has been completely restored by our cabinetmaker, and the veneer is superb. Beautiful brass fittings; the rocaille handles are very beautiful— antique, but not original.
