Pierre Nogaret - Pair Of Louis XV Period Cabriolet Armchairs - Stamped

Artist: Pierre Nogaret, Maitre En 1745
A pair of Louis XV period cabriolet armchairs in molded and richly carved walnut. Beautifully decorated with curves and counter-curves, with whiplash-shaped armrests. Each armrest is unique, featuring specific carving on the upper rail of the back and on the seat rail, centered with flowers flanked by foliage. Our chairs are very similar models with only minor differences in carving. Upholstered in green silk, they are the work of Pierre Nogaret in Lyon, circa 1760. One of the two chairs bears Nogaret's stamp from Lyon. Pierre Nogaret (1718-1771), who became a master craftsman in Lyon in 1745, is one of the few provincial artisans of the 18th century whose name has remained famous. Highly prized during his lifetime, many of his creations left the Lyon region. These are characterized above all by their movement. Pierre Kjellberg notes that "priority is given to line over decoration." Thus, these swirling lines rhythmically shape the seat with their curves and counter-curves. They are interrupted only by the encounter with a blooming peony, a bouquet of flowers, or a leafy scroll, the carving of which is always intricate and generous. While Nogaret's creations rival the finest Parisian pieces, they are distinguished, among other things, by a seat that is both lower and wider. A chair by his hand is recognizable at a glance: a subtle interplay of curves and counter-curves, a typical, very flared armrest, a whiplash-shaped console, and a play of moldings. Balance and dynamism, elegance and movement, are the terms most often used to define his style. Finally, impeccable quality in construction, in the choice of woods, and in the care taken with the joining elements ensures that his creations withstand the test of time. The influence of Tilliard and Cresson, one for the lines, the other for the carving, proves that Nogaret mastered the skills of the Parisian craftsmen. Today, several of the cabinetmaker's chairs are preserved in public collections, notably the Museums of Decorative Arts in Lyon and Paris, the Museum of Art and History in Geneva, the Louvre Museum, and the Nissim de Camondo Museum in Paris. Beautiful chairs, rich carving, perfect proportions, impeccable finish—this is the work of a great master. Excellent overall condition. The chairs are sound and solid. The bold and generous carving is well preserved. The seat is firm. Height: 92 cm; Seat height: 41 cm; Width: 62.5 cm; Depth: 60 cm
