"the Charity"—carved Oak Panel, 17th/18th-century Flemish Work Based On A Painting By Hendrik Goltzius

Artist: D'après Hendrik Goltzius Ou Jan Pietersz Saenredam
Charity; a beautiful antique carved oak panel.
A work from the late 17th/early 18th century based on a piece by Hendrik Goltzius or Jan Pietersz. Saenredam (a painter and engraver from the first quarter of the 17th century in the Northern Netherlands).
Dimensions: 32 x 19.5 cm.
Our bas-relief, drawn from the divine virtues, depicts Caritas (Charity), one of the virtues—Hope, Charity, and Faith. It is the work of a skilled sculptor who imbued his piece with a strong character, showcasing the craftsmanship of a talented hand.
The composition, vibrant with energy, is enlivened by moving putti surrounding the central figure; at the top, the horizon is framed by clouds and halos of divine light.
The design draws inspiration from late 16th-century Mannerist influences, as evidenced by the expressive postures of the figures and the flowing hair of Charity. This fascinating bas-relief appears to have once been set within a frame; its dimensions and shape suggest that it was likely part of a Dutch oak cabinet.
The artist who created this panel, demonstrating great mastery of his craft, has left us this small work of art with a strong character.
