Louis XVI-era Mahogany Console Table, Late 16th Year Of The Directoire, Late 18th Century, Stamped

A mahogany-veneered console table that, when unfolded, serves as a library table. Stamped with the mark of Ferdinand Bury, who was admitted as a master craftsman in 1774 and died in 1795. Guild mark of the master cabinetmakers.  

Unlike a game table, whose top is covered with felt, the top of this library table is entirely veneered with precious wood—in this case, flamed mahogany set within an ebony frame. The tabletop pivots and opens along the length of the table. Once unfolded, the rectangular tabletop becomes a perfect square, measuring 102 by 102 cm. The pivot mechanism also reveals a storage compartment concealed within the table’s apron.  

Characteristic of the late Louis XVI period, this game table embodies a refined neoclassical style, with ornamentation inspired by ancient architecture, such as bronze drops and triglyphs crafted from stamped brass plates. The slender leg base lends the table a simplicity that contrasts with the use of a substantial mahogany veneer for the inner tabletop.

The buff-finish varnish is in very good overall condition; the table has been restored by a cabinetmaker.
