17th-century Italian School The Virgin And Child Presenting The Rosary To Saint Dominic
17th-century French or Italian school — The Virgin and Child Presenting the Rosary to Saint Dominic
Description
17th-century oil on canvas set in a remarkable carved and gilded wooden frame.
The composition, imbued with Baroque devotion, depicts the Virgin Mary seated on clouds, draped in a deep blue cloak over a red tunic, holding the Infant Jesus. The Child is handing the rosary to Saint Dominic de Guzmán, who is kneeling in prayer and wearing the Dominican habit (white habit and black cloak). At his feet is his traditional attribute, a dog holding a burning torch in its mouth, a symbol of the Domini canes (“the dogs of the Lord”).
The work stands out for its masterful use of chiaroscuro, illuminating the Marian group at the center of the scene, and for the great expressive intensity in the characters’ gazes.
Condition
Canvas: In good overall condition. Luminous colors, minor historical restorations, and period craquelure that attest to its authenticity. (Small losses in the lower right corner).
Frame: Period gilded wood frame with rich carved decoration featuring foliage, shells, and plant motifs. Very beautiful gilding preserved with a natural antique patina.
Dimensions without frame: 55 cm / 46 cm
With frame: 77 cm / 68 cm.
