Japanese Bronze Okimono — A Pilgrim Traveler With A Conch Shell

A finely detailed Japanese bronze statuette (Meiji style), depicting a man in traditional attire, with his hair tied in a topknot (chonmage), wearing a family crest (mon) on his kimono, leaning on a long staff, and carrying a wicker basket (oi) on his back—characteristic attributes of a yamabushi, an itinerant ascetic monk of the mountains. Hanging from his belt is a finely carved conch shell (horagai), traditionally used by these pilgrims. It features a beautiful, warm brown patina and meticulous craftsmanship, with delicately sculpted drapery. A collector’s piece full of charm and cultural significance.
