Original Drawing From The Late 19th Century: View Of The Vosges Mountain Range From Mont Roussot

Original drawing. Pen and Indian ink. 19 x 48 cm. Vertical fold (sheet formerly folded in half). A few faint foxing spots.

Title in ink at the bottom of the drawing: “The Vosges Mountains as seen from Mont Roussot.” Signed in pencil in the lower right corner: “B. Geugeot [?].”

At the top of the drawing, the following are indicated in ink: Montbéliard, Fort du Mont Vaudois, Ballon de Servance, Ballon d’Alsace 1,257 m., Fort du Salberg, Fort de la Chaux, Belfort, Ballon de Guebwiller 1,426 m, and Audincourt (to the right of the drawing, positioned further forward than the other named locations).

The forts of Mont-Vaudois, Salbert, and Lachaux were built between 1874 and 1878 as part of the defensive network surrounding Belfort. Mont Roussot, from which this view was drawn, is located on the heights of the town of Valentigney (Doubs, south of Sochaux, Montbéliard, and Exincourt).
