Kropatschek Rifle, Model 1886 – Steyr

Kropatschek Model 1886 military rifle, manufactured by the famous Austrian arms manufacturer Österreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft in Steyr.

Adopted by Portugal in the late 19th century, the Kropatschek 1886 is one of the last major European military rifles to use a tubular magazine located beneath the barrel. Its manual repeating mechanism with a sliding breech is based on the system developed by Alfred von Kropatschek.

The rifle is chambered for the standard 8 × 60 R Kropatschek cartridge.

The cartridge case bears the clearly identifiable manufacturer’s markings:

“OE.W.F.G. STEYR – 1886”

as well as various regulation stamps and serial numbers visible on different parts of the rifle.

A fine example retaining its original military configuration, with its wooden stock, metal fittings, rear sight, and tubular magazine.

The stock and barrel show numerous marks, dents, and signs of past use. Nevertheless, the wood retains a beautiful color and an even patina.

The metal parts also feature an antique patina with wear on the bronze finish and signs of use, without detracting from the overall appearance of the firearm.

Also noteworthy are several military markings and hallmarks on the mount, which are particularly interesting for this specimen.

A very fine service weapon from the late 19th century, now sought after both for its historical significance and for its distinctive tubular magazine mechanism.
