Pennant Of The 172nd Infantry Regiment – World War I

Rare tricolor pennant of the 172nd Infantry Regiment, richly embroidered and bearing several of the main inscriptions of battles and sectors in which the regiment distinguished itself during World War I.

One side features, in the center, a depiction of the Lion of Belfort, applied in high relief against the three national colors. It is accompanied by the number “172” as well as flaming grenades embroidered in yellow thread.

The other side bears the following embroidered inscriptions:

ALSACE
BOIS d’AILLY
CHAMPAGNE
VERDUN – SOMME
AISNE

The number 172 and the flaming pomegranates are also present in the corners.

The pennant retains on its attachment side a leather border with its original fastening ties, a particularly interesting detail that allows one to appreciate its design and use.

The piece as a whole displays a uniform, aged patina, with wear, small tears, stains, and signs of age clearly visible in the photographs. These imperfections have been deliberately left unhidden and contribute to the piece’s historical character.

This pennant is a beautiful regimental memento from the Great War, particularly evocative due to its numerous campaign inscriptions and its central motif featuring the Lion of Belfort.
