Set Of 9 Polychrome Carrara Marble Fruits, 19th Century

This set of decorative pieces is a collection of polychrome Carrara marble fruits from Italy, hand-sculpted and hand-painted using the traditional trompe-l'œil technique. It features several realistic, life-size varieties: a very large peach in the center, black figs (including one with visible flesh), an apricot, apples, and an almond in the lower right corner.
Production and Period Details
  • Origin: These pieces come almost exclusively from the Tuscany region of Italy (workshops in Carrara or Volterra).
  • Technique: Each fruit is handcrafted from a block of limestone, polished, and then stained with natural water-based pigments and beeswax to mimic the velvety texture of the fruit’s skin.
  • Period: The level of patina, the wear on the polychrome, and the realism of the details generally date this type of collection to the late 19th century
  • Small natural chips at the edges or slight loss of paint; otherwise in good condition, fresh colors
  • Large peach, 12 cm in diameter
