High Middle Ages Crucifix, Carved And Polychrome Wood
This freestanding crucifix displays all the characteristics of a regional folk art piece or a work from the High Period (17th or 18th century), characterized by a naive, expressive, and deeply devotional style.
The sculpture of Christ (32 cm): The body of Jesus is carved from dense wood (probably boxwood or a fruit tree), which was standard for small altar or bedside figures of Christ due to the fineness of the grain. The anatomy is simplified, almost primitive (typical of folk art), marked by a short and rudimentary perizonium (loincloth). The head leans forward, with features carved in a rough and stylized manner.

- The pegged assembly: The presence of wooden pegs at the shoulders to connect the arms to the torso attests to an ancient, artisanal manufacturing technique common before the 19th century.
- The wrought-iron nails: The hand-forged nails with pyramidal heads reinforce the piece’s authenticity and its roots in a pre-industrial era (generally prior to the 19th century).
- The cross and the base (79 cm): The blackened wooden cross (ebony imitation) rests on a base with concentric circles or “steps.” Its large size (79 cm) makes it an imposing piece, likely a chapel altar cross or a sacristy cross.
