18th-century Wrought-iron Cat-slayer, Folk Art
This antique piece is called a vent guard (or spike bar). In the fields of folk art and antique ironwork, this specific type of bar, featuring formidable curved spikes, is also known as a cat-gutting bar. It is a deterrent and defensive security system generally dating from the 17th to 18th centuries, crafted by a blacksmith. Characteristics and Use
- Function: Mounted vertically or horizontally in the middle of an air vent or a small, low cellar window, it prevented human intrusions as well as the passage of stray animals thanks to its sharp prongs.
- Structure: It features a flat mounting bracket (bottom left) with holes for nails or hinges, from which extend wrought-iron rods that have been drawn out and hot-split into shapes resembling plant spines or aggressive claws.
