Victor Hugo wrote "Goddesses, now, open the Helicon for me." on a letter that Emmanuel Des Essarts, who had just attended the wedding of Fréderic Mistral, sent him to convey the tributes and wishes of the poets of Provence including Félix Grap. A phrase from Virgil that Hugo would borrow for the Legend of the Centuries. Attached is a photo representing Hugo around 1870, a snapshot (8 x 10 cm) by Carjat Etienne, Fareins, Ain (01) (France) 1828 - Paris (France) 1906, photoglyp., Lemercier et Cie, Paris Carjat was a French journalist, caricaturist and photographer, best known for his portraits of Parisian political, literary and artistic figures in the late 1800s.
