Born on March 1, 1846, or 1848, in Mulhouse (Haut-Rhin). Died in 1927 in Paris.
Painter of historical scenes, genre scenes, portraits, animated landscapes, landscapes, water landscapes, seascapes; engraver.
His teachers were Soulary and L. Cogniet. From 1869 to 1880, he submitted portraits and several genre pieces to the Paris Salon. He received the following awards: Honorable Mention in 1883; medals: third class in 1884, second class in 1886, and a silver medal in 1889 (World’s Fair). Knight of the Legion
of Honor, 1893; gold medal, 1900 (World’s Fair).
Member of the Society of French Artists since 1883.
His works include: The Archbishop’s Palace in Salzburg; The Seashore at Grandchamp; Shrimp Fisherwomen at Grandchamp.
He abandoned historical painting to devote himself to landscape, specializing in depicting picturesque sites in the South of France.
