Circa 1930

Large sheet signed lower left F.E. Lahaye, depicting a view of a terrace adorned with ancient column ruins overlooking the sea. Clever choice of colors, layered across three distinct planes. Protected by its glass and featuring its original frame, backing, and framer’s label.

This view is similar to others depicting the ancient site of Tipasa, exhibited in Algiers in 1934.

François-Etienne Lahaye (1878–1949)
Thanks to a wealthy family and the influence of Léon Detroy, Lahaye was able to devote himself to a career as a painter. He developed a style characterized by a keen attention to light, drawing, and decorative compositions, while also drawing influence from naturalism and symbolism.
He traveled extensively, notably to Brittany, the Maghreb, Corsica, and Egypt, which became major sources of inspiration.  After World War I, his recognition grew, culminating in his major exhibition in 1922, when the government purchased his Karnak triptych.
Having stepped back from the public eye after the accolades he received, the exhibition in Algiers appears to have been his last of significant importance. However, he continued to paint and restored the Hôtel Choisity in Aramon, where he set up his studio. He died in 1949.
