Obelisk
Two pieces of marble
Dimensions: H. 57 (cm.)
Modern work
The ancient obelisk and its reuse Originally monolithic monuments, quadrangular and tapered in shape, ending in a point called a pyramidion, they have been in use since the beginning of the second millennium BCE. Erected in front of temples to honor the gods—notably Ra, the sun god—they symbolized divine light and the stability of royal power. Driven by a fascination with antiquity, several of these monoliths were brought to Europe. They gave free rein to the imagination of various artists and artisans. As early as the 1770s, clock cases modeled after their proportions were marketed and met with great success. Scaled-down versions of the Roman models were crafted from precious materials, not to mention the idealized graphic representations. Truly timeless, this form has been reimagined throughout the ages, as evidenced by Sandro Petti’s lamps for Jansen.
Condition report: excellent condition, very minor wear
