Gilded Oak
Console Table with Doweled Band
Dimensions: H. 87; W. 98; D. 42 (cm)
Paris, circa 1780
A rare small rectangular console table in gilded oak, mostly in its original gilding. It rests on four tapered, fluted, and serrated legs with asparagus-shaped tips. The legs are joined by a sinuous, interlaced crossbar supporting a bouquet. The bands are hollowed out on the reverse and feature friezes pierced with foliage scrolls, palmettes, and acanthus leaves. An ovate molding supports the white Carrara marble top with a recessed groove.
A piece from the Neoclassical period, reminiscent of the design collections of ornamentalists such as Jean-Louis Prieur. Excellent Parisian craftsmanship is evident in the use of oak, the hollowing-out of the interior of the belt crossbars, and the precision with which the crossbar and the upper section are joined.
Condition report: signs of wear from use; very minor losses in the gilding.
