Pair of torches
Gilded bronze, 3 elements
Dimensions: H. 27.5 (cm.)
Paris, circa 1800
Pair of torches resting on a circular base decorated with a frieze of palmettes, pearls, and a knurled trellis. The fluted shaft and Medici-style bowl rest on a palmette pedestal. Beautifully burnished finish.
A prestigious model
This pair of torches is a variation on a model now preserved in the collections of the Château de Fontainebleau. Inventories indicate that it adorned the apartment of Marshal Duroc in 1807. Another variation also adorned the Salon of the ground floor apartment of the Cour Ovale in 1810. Numerous models of torches with fluted stems and inverted leaves, with variations, were delivered during the Empire and were manufactured by Claude Galle and André-Antoine Ravrio.
Condition report: very fresh gilding (original) with signs of wear. Superb patina of age; these gilded bronzes have probably never been chemically cleaned, as evidenced by the color of the reverse side.
