Louis XVI Writing Table In Marquetry, 19th Century

Louis XVI-style writing desk, 19th-century.

The oval-shaped top is the most striking feature of the piece.
It is entirely decorated with beautiful geometric marquetry forming a latticework of rhombuses, punctuated by small clover-shaped motifs or crossbars in dark wood.
The whole design is accentuated by a herringbone-patterned veneer frame highlighted by a delicate gilt-bronze molding.
The outer border is embellished with an elegant openwork frieze featuring small arched motifs, typical of the neoclassical decorative style.

The dynamically shaped waistband also features a rich geometric marquetry decoration that repeats the lattice motif and the small motifs in contrasting wood.

The front of the table opens with a pull-out panel that serves as a writing desk, lined on the inside with brown leather featuring a gold-embossed pattern of small ironwork, framed by an ornamental frieze and fleurons at the corners. This small pull-out drawer provides a particularly elegant and functional writing surface.

On the side, a slightly curved drawer is fitted with a gilded bronze handle featuring a mascaron motif and a pull ring.
The interior, designed as a storage compartment, underscores its purpose as a small writing desk and a piece of ladies’ furniture.

The piece rests on four slightly curved and tapered legs, adorned at the top with magnificent gilded bronze finials featuring plant and foliage motifs.
The legs terminate in small, finely chiseled gilded bronze feet.

The table also features a lower, oval-shaped, scalloped crossbar, entirely inlaid with the same latticework design and dark wood motifs.
Its border is accented with gilded bronze molding, ensuring perfect decorative continuity with the top surface.

The richness of the marquetry, the perfectly executed repetition of the motifs, the gilded bronze accents, and the lower crossbar shelf lend this table a particularly elegant and refined silhouette.

France, Louis XVI style, 19th century.

A beautiful decorative and functional piece, particularly suited to a distinctive interior, study, library, or living room.
