Louis XV Style Bombé Commode, Marquetry With Birds
A beautiful Louis XV style commode, with a curved front and sides, dating from the 20th century. The front opens with two large drawers without a visible crossbar, emphasizing the purity and continuity of the curved line. The structure is oak, richly veneered with precious woods—primarily rosewood and violet wood—arranged in floral and geometric marquetry. A superb marquetry bird stands amidst a profusion of flowers. The front features a refined decoration of leafy scrolls and stylized bouquets, centered around a vase of flowers, a symmetrical composition typical of the Rococo style. The curved sides are enlivened with a carefully chosen veneer with particularly decorative grain. The commode rests on four elegantly slender, cabriole legs terminating in finely chased gilt-bronze sabots. The rich ornamentation of mercury-gilt bronze, of exceptional quality, includes: substantial rocaille corner mounts with foliate decoration, shaped drawer pulls, openwork keyhole escutcheons, foliate sabots, and a central ornamental bronze on the lower rail. The top is crowned with a molded marble slab with a corbin beak edge, in pinkish tones and light veining, perfectly fitted to the curved shape of the piece. The whole presents a remarkable harmony between the decorative richness and the elegance of the proportions, perfectly illustrating the refinement of 18th-century French cabinetmaking. It measures 115 cm in length, 53 cm in depth, and 87 cm in height.
