Description of the work
A dynamic historical and military scene depicting a dramatic clash during the conquest of Algeria. In the foreground, a cavalryman from the 1st Regiment of Chasseurs à Cheval dismounts, firmly holding his frightened mottled-gray horse to come to the aid of a wounded comrade-in-arms lying on the ground. In the background, French cavalry faces off against Arab cavalry against the rugged backdrop of mountainous gorges.
The composition displays great dynamism and a remarkable mastery of the anatomical rendering of the horses and the detail of the uniforms (shako, dolman, cavalry saber).
