Pair Of Carved And Gilded Wooden Mascaron "heads Of Bacchus," Louis XV Period, 18th Century

Pair of Carved and Gilded Wooden Mascaron “Heads of Bacchus” – Louis XV Period (18th century)

Description
Pair of wall-mounted mascarons made of finely carved wood and gilded with gold leaf, from the Louis XV period (18th century).

These wall sconces depict the grimacing, expressive heads of satyrs or young Bacchus figures. Their hair is sumptuously crowned with clusters of grapes and vine leaves featuring clearly defined veins. The carving features high relief with a beautifully dynamic quality, characteristic of the decorative repertoire and imagination of the Rocaille period.

The flat back retains its original construction with a wooden reinforcing crossbar and its original patina. They are now equipped with a wire hanging system ready for installation.

Condition
Gilding: Beautiful original or antique gilding with a warm patina and some signs of wear revealing the undercoat/preparation in places.

Structure: Very good overall condition. There is a natural crack caused by wood drying at the top of one of the heads (on a bunch of grapes), as well as slight wear or minor imperfections consistent with their age (18th century).
