A rare and moving historical relic from the 19th century, preserving a fragment of the shirt worn by Monsignor Denis-Auguste Affre when he was mortally wounded on the barricades of Paris on June 25, 1848.

Denis-Auguste Affre (1793–1848), Archbishop of Paris since 1840, was a prominent figure in 19th-century French religious and political history. Eager to ease tensions during the days of insurrection in June 1848, he went to the barricades to call for reconciliation between the insurgents and the police. As he stepped forward holding a green branch—a symbol of peace—he was struck by a bullet and died a few days later, on June 27, 1848, from his injuries.

This precious memento preserves a piece of fabric from the shirt he was wearing at the time of this tragic event. The fragment, measuring approximately 7 x 10.5 cm, still bears several visible traces of blood, serving as tangible evidence of this historic episode.

Beneath the fragment is a handwritten inscription from that period reading:
“A piece of the shirt worn by Monsignor Affre when he was mortally wounded on June 25, 1848.”

The fragment is displayed in an antique frame from the early 20th century (10 x 13.5 cm). On the reverse, the mounting retains four episcopal seals in red wax placed at the corners, the identity of which has yet to be established, adding further interest to this relic.
